By 1am I was sweaty, in Mana’s words, “de los piez a la cabeza.” But I felt great!
Who knew that an evening could come so close to perfect? With friends who I hadn’t spent time with in over a year, but with whom I so easily picked up right where we left off, I sought to have a night of local Miami flavor.
I never would have imagined it, but the evening started with salsa lessons by a Michigan native…good lessons too! Before I knew it I found myself with old and new friends at a space for dancing named after one of my favorite fried foods: Yuca.
The evening flowed wonderfully, even when I was getting so tired that friends kept me from tripping over myself mid dances. Every now and then I would look around, to make sure my out of town friends had dance partners and were having a good time, to find I was the only one in our rather large group not dancing.
It was the kind of night throughout which water was the best drink, watching others dance was about as fun as being on the dance floor myself, and nothing could wipe the smile off my face. I even got to enjoy interesting compliments; one in particular very respectful and therefore appreciated, and another I didn’t quite understand and needed explained…something along the lines of “you’re dancing on the two.”
I would say it’s rare to have an evening so close to perfect with a group of about 13 people who know each other one way or another. Why else would I still be thinking of that super fun Mana merengue danced with a new friend over 12 hours ago? Rare or not…the near perfect evening was had. So…
Thanks to all who made it so.
